The short version

Basic cleaning: yes. Driving around, avoiding obstacles, vacuuming and returning to the dock all run on the robot’s own sensors and onboard software. No internet required for any of it.

Everything smart: no. Saved maps, no-go zones, room selection, scheduling and phone control generally need the app, which generally needs the cloud.

Setup: usually yes, at least once. Most robots want an internet connection and an account to get through initial pairing, even if you intend to run them offline afterwards.

So the realistic answer is that most robot vacuums degrade to a fairly dumb but functional vacuum without Wi-Fi. Whether that is acceptable depends entirely on why you are asking.

What actually still works when the internet goes down?

The core stuff, because it never needed the cloud in the first place:

  • Starting a clean from the physical button on the robot
  • Navigation, mapping in the moment, obstacle avoidance
  • Returning to the dock and recharging
  • Auto-emptying and mop washing, on docks that have it

What you lose:

  • Saved maps and room names
  • No-go zones and virtual walls
  • Scheduling
  • Any control from your phone
  • Suction and water-level adjustment, on models with no physical controls
  • Firmware updates

The pattern is simple enough: anything the robot decides in the moment survives; anything it remembers or is told tends not to.

Does this vary by brand?

Substantially, and this is the part worth knowing before you buy.

Eufy has the most genuinely offline-friendly options. The RoboVac 11S Max has no Wi-Fi hardware at all - it is controlled entirely by a button on the robot and an infrared remote, including daily scheduling. No app, no account, no setup. If offline operation is your actual requirement rather than a preference, a robot with no radio in it is the only guaranteed answer.

Roborock is the problem case. Reports are consistent that recent Roborock models expect a constant internet connection and behave badly without one - refusing to run, dropping features, or disconnecting from Wi-Fi entirely. There is an active workaround that involves running a fake Roborock server on a mini-router so the robot believes it is talking to the cloud while everything stays local, which tells you how much the design assumes connectivity.

Most other brands sit in between: press the button and it cleans, open the app and nothing works.

I want to be careful here, because this is exactly the kind of claim that changes between firmware versions and gets repeated long after it stops being true. Treat the Roborock point as “widely reported, worth verifying on the specific model you are buying” rather than settled fact. It is on my list to test directly.

Why would you want a robot vacuum offline anyway?

Three different reasons, and they need different answers.

“My internet is unreliable.” You are fine. Nearly any robot will keep cleaning through an outage, and reconnect when it comes back. Do not overthink this.

“I do not want an account and a subscription.” Harder. Most robots require an account to complete setup. A no-Wi-Fi model like the 11S Max avoids it entirely.

“I do not want a camera and a floor plan of my house on someone’s server.” This is the serious version, and it deserves a straight answer: a mapping robot builds a detailed floor plan of your home, and on most models that map lives in the manufacturer’s cloud. Camera-equipped models add photographs of your floor and, sometimes, remote viewing.

If that is your concern, buying a normal robot and hoping to keep it offline is the weakest of your options.

What are the real privacy options?

Buy a robot with no camera and no Wi-Fi. Cheapest, simplest, most effective. You give up mapping, app control and scheduling flexibility. For a small flat this is a genuinely reasonable trade.

Buy a mapping robot and block it at the router. Works to varying degrees depending on brand - and “varying degrees” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, which is why I want to measure it rather than assert it. It also breaks the app, so you are back to button-pressing.

Root it and run local firmware. Valetudo replaces the cloud connection with local control entirely, and it is a serious, well-documented project - it exists because security researcher Dennis Giese found ways to root these devices. Two honest caveats: the supported list is exhaustive and mostly older hardware, so you cannot buy a 2026 flagship and expect it to work. And rooting ranges from “plug in a laptop” to “solder a UART adapter”, with at least one model that will permanently brick if you try. Excellent option for the right person. Not a mainstream recommendation.

Is a camera worse than a LiDAR map?

Different, and I would not automatically say worse.

A camera model photographs your floor for obstacle recognition, and some allow remote viewing - a genuine security consideration and an obvious one.

But a LiDAR map is not nothing. A detailed floor plan of your home, including room sizes and furniture layout, is meaningful data whether or not a lens was involved. The absence of a camera is not the same as the absence of surveillance.

If you care about this, the questions worth asking are: does it have a camera, does it require an account, where is the data processed, and does it still work when you cut it off. That last one is the only question that is answered by testing rather than by reading a policy - which is exactly why it is in my protocol.

What should you actually buy?

If offline is a hard requirement: buy a robot with no Wi-Fi hardware. Nothing else is guaranteed.

If you want mapping and mostly-private: buy a LiDAR model without a camera, accept the account, and decide whether the floor plan bothers you. Most people land here.

If you are technical and patient: buy something on the Valetudo supported list, second-hand, and uncloud it. Best outcome, most effort, narrowest hardware choice.

If you just have flaky internet: stop worrying and buy on cleaning performance.

For a first pass, browse current robot vacuums that do not require Wi-Fi, then verify the manual for the exact model. Offline behavior changes by model and firmware, so do not treat a search result as proof.

What I will test

The honest state of this page is that it summarises documentation and other people’s reports. The interesting question - what actually happens when you block the robot’s MAC address at the router and press start - is not answered anywhere reliably, because almost nobody tests it.

So that is in the protocol: after normal setup, block the robot at the router, attempt a standard clean, and record whether behaviour is full, degraded or failed. Alongside it: camera present or not, account required or not, local control available or not, and where the data is stated to be processed. Here is how that works.
