What Does a Robot Vacuum Actually Cost Per Year?
Everyone quotes around $150 a year. I priced every part at Roborock's own store and got nearly double that. The gap is almost entirely one component.

The short version
Buy replacement parts from the manufacturer and a self-emptying, self-washing robot costs roughly $250 to $330 a year to keep running. Buy third-party compatible parts and it is roughly $120 to $170.
That gap is often more than $150 a year, and I think it is the most under-discussed number in this entire category. Over five years, consumables on a mid-range machine can quietly cost more than the machine did.
Why is everyone quoting $150 a year?
Because the popular estimates use street prices for third-party parts, not what the manufacturer charges.
The cost calculator at Best Robot Vacuum assumes $8 per HEPA filter, $6 per side brush and $5 per dock dust bag, and lands at about $157-170 a year. Those are fair prices for compatible parts on Amazon. They are not the prices on the box you will click first.
Here is what Roborock charges on its own US store, checked 17 August 2026:

Look at the filter. $16.50 against an assumed $8. On a two-month replacement schedule that single line item is the difference between a cheap year and an annoying one.
What does the manufacturer say you should replace, and when?
Roborock’s published schedule:
- HEPA filter - every 2 months, or 150 hours of runtime
- Dust bag - every 8 weeks, though 30-60 days is more typical depending on floor size and pets
- Main brush - every 6 to 12 months
- Mop pad - every 1 to 3 months
- Side brush - when the arms visibly bend or fray
Take those at face value and multiply out.
So what is the real annual number?

The low end is a small flat, no pets, light mopping. The high end is a bigger place run four or five times a week with a shedding dog and daily mopping - which is exactly the household that buys a self-emptying robot in the first place. Most people reading this are closer to the high end than they think.
One thing worth noticing: electricity is a rounding error. About 16 kWh a year, roughly $3. Consumables cost eighty times more than the power does. If a buying guide spends a paragraph on energy efficiency here, it is padding.
Where can you actually save money?
Filters. Start here and mostly stop here. Six official filters a year is $99. Third-party filters at $8 are $48. A filter is pleated paper and mesh - the engineering risk in buying a compatible one is genuinely low, unlike a battery or a dock board. If you cut one line item, cut this one.
If you already own a compatible model, compare current replacement filters and dust bags before paying the manufacturer’s price. Check the exact model number before ordering.
Wash the washable ones properly. Roborock’s filters are washable, and the two-month interval assumes you are rinsing between changes, not instead of changing. A filter that gets rinsed and fully dried on schedule actually reaches its rated life. One that never gets touched does not.
Dust bags are the tax for not touching dirt. About $30 a year. Some docks are bagless and empty into a washable bin, which removes the line entirely in exchange for a dusty thirty seconds every few weeks. If bag cost bothers you, buy a bagless dock - do not stretch bag intervals until the dock jams.
Cleaning solution is more optional than the dock implies. Your dock will prompt you to refill it. Whether you need the branded 480 ml bottle at $18.99 is a separate question, and it is the least substantiated claim in the category.
Do not stretch mop pads. This is the consumable people skimp on most and the one where skimping shows fastest. A pad that has gone stiff and grey stops mopping and starts smearing. Cheap to over-buy, genuinely bad to under-replace.
What is not in that table?
Battery replacement. Batteries are consumables on a longer clock - usually two to four years of daily cycling before runtime drops noticeably. Whether you can swap one yourself, and whether the part is still sold when you need it, varies wildly by brand. I am not going to put a number on this until I have owned machines long enough to have real failures.
Dock replacement. Rare. Expensive when it happens.
Your time. Nobody prices this and it is real. Even a fully self-emptying, self-washing machine needs the roller de-tangled, sensors wiped, dock cleaned and tanks refilled. Call it fifteen minutes a month if you are on top of it.
Does this change which robot you should buy?
Two things I would actually do differently knowing this.
Add about $250 a year when you compare models. A $550 robot and an $800 robot look $250 apart on day one. By the end of year two they are much closer, because running costs vary far less between price tiers than sticker prices do. The cheap machine is not as cheap as it looks. The expensive one is not as expensive.
Check parts availability before you buy, not after. A discontinued model with no filters in stock is a $600 machine with a two-month useful life. This matters more than most performance specs and it is the least interesting thing to check, which is why nobody does it. Search the exact model name plus “filter” and see whether anyone is still selling one.
What I will publish once I have real data
Stated intervals are not measured intervals. Manufacturers have an obvious reason to recommend frequent replacement. Owners have an obvious reason to stretch it. Neither number is the truth, and right now I only have one of them.
Once units have been through the long-term reliability log for 30, 90 and 180 days, I will publish what actually needed replacing and when - weighed roller wrap, real filter condition, actual bag fill rates - against what the manual claimed. Where these numbers came from
All part prices were read directly from Roborock’s own US accessories store on 17 August 2026, with the 6-pack of dust bags and the 480 ml floor cleaning solution checked on their individual product pages. Prices move constantly and several parts were discounted on the day I looked; I used regular prices, not sale prices, so the table does not flatter itself.
The third-party street-price comparison and the electricity assumptions come from the Best Robot Vacuum cost calculator, which is the most transparent of the estimates I found about its own inputs. CNET reached a similar conclusion from a different direction in its piece on robot vacuums not being a one-time expense, analysing official parts pricing across iRobot, Roborock, Ecovacs and Shark.
Replacement intervals are Roborock’s own published guidance. I have not yet verified any of them against a machine I own, which is the whole point of the disclaimer at the top.
